England has won on penalties and reached another major tournament semi-final, but
this was Saka's moment of catharsis. Bukayo Saka made the long walk to the centre
circle, placed the ball on the mark, took five steps back and took his stance. The
whole of England wanted Saka to have this moment.
In a thrilling match in Dusseldorf, Germany, England’s Saka helped his team secure
a crucial win against Switzerland in the EURO 2024 quarter-final. The match saw
Breel Embolo score first for Switzerland in the 75th minute. However, Saka made a
remarkable comeback by scoring in the 80th minute, pushing the game into extra
time and eventually a penalty shootout.
England triumphed in the penalties with a 5-3 win, thanks to successful spot kicks by
Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, and Trent Alexander
Arnold. Saka was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.
After the match, Saka expressed his pride in the team’s resilience, saying, “It was
special for how we fought back and to go to penalties as well. We all know what
happened the last time we took a penalty shootout at the Euros. I’m so proud of
everyone that we got over the line.”
He also shared his journey of overcoming challenges, stating, “I have faith in God.
To come back from something like that was difficult but I used it to make me stronger
and today I took the chance, so I’m happy.”
England is set to face the Netherlands in the semi-final match at the BVB Stadium
Dortmund on Thursday.

“That smile. I love that smile! That smile is beautiful!” exclaimed Gary
Neville on  ITV. David Beckham wrote on  Instagram, “That’s the smile we all
needed to see.”

It was as if the whole of England, even putting aside the club rivalries, had wanted
Saka to have this moment. “He’s just that perfect boy which you wish will either be

your son or your brother who’s just been brought up the right way,” is how Arsenal
and England teammate Aaron Ramsdale described him.
