The famous Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has won the Best International Act at the 2022 BET Awards. She also made history as the first Nigerian and African female musician to win the Best International Act at the BET Awards.
Tems was awarded the Best International Act on Sunday 26th of June at the 2022 BET Awards ceremony. The musician, born Temilade Openiyi, beat competition from her fellow Nigerian Fireboy, Dave (UK), Dinos from France and Fally Ipupa from Congo.
Others nominated in the category included Little Simz from the UK, Ludmilla from Brazil, Major League Djz from South Africa, and Tayc from France.
During her acceptance speech, Tems noted that it was an honour for her to receive the award. She dedicated the win to everyone striving to achieve their dreams, urging them to continue the hard work.Tems urged other women and girls to continue on their chosen path. “Where I am from, things like this don’t happen.”
Tems was also nominated in the Best New Artiste category alongside Muni Long, Yung Bleu, Latto, and baby Keem. Unfortunately, she lost the award to Latto. Meanwhile, the remix of Wizkid’s ‘Essence’Best Collaboration. Tems, who was featured on the song, accepted the award on behalf of Wizkid.
Essence was nominated against ‘Every Change I Get’ by DJ Khaled ft Lil baby and Lil Durk; ‘Family Ties’ by Baby Seem ft Kendrick Lamar; ‘Whole Lotta’ by Bia ft Nicki Minaj; ‘Way 2 Sexy’, Drake ft Future and Young Thug, and ‘Kiss me More’ by Doja Cat ft SZA.
