The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the 2023 presidential election.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu four days after the elections as the winner on Wednesday, March 1 at 4:10 am in Abuja where the results were collated. By this declaration, Tinubu would be the 16th president of Nigeria since independence.
The APC candidate polled total votes of 8,794,726 to defeat his closest rival and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar who scored 6,984,520 votes, and Peter Obi of the Labour party who polled 6,101,533 votes.
The INEC said the registered voters for the election were 93,469,008, while 25,286,616 voters were accredited. While the total valid votes were put at 24,025,940, and the total rejected votes were 939,278.
The INEC chairman said the total number of votes cast was 24,965,218 and went ahead to declare Tinubu the winner. “I certify that I am the returning officer for the 2023 presidential election held on the 25th of February 2023.
“That Tinubu Bola Ahmed of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and returned elected. The certificate of return to the president-elect and vice president-elect will take place here at 3 pm today.”
Though the elections and further pronouncement of a winner by the commission have been greeted with widespread grievances particularly by main opposition parties PDP and LP, the commission responded with an assurance that the polls would be reviewed where necessary in accordance with Section 65 of the Electoral Act.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who turns 71 later this month, was a two-time governor in Lagos between 1999 and 2007, where he has ascribed the pioneer and reformer that led to the transformation of the state which is now Nigeria’s economic hub.
His victory will see him become Nigeria’s fifth president since the country returned to democratic rule in 1999, emerging as the winner for the number one position of the country on his first attempt. He will inherit a plethora of economic and security crises from his predecessor Muhammadu Buhari.
In his acceptance speech, Tinubu said he would run an inclusive government while appreciating INEC for running a ‘free and fair’ election.
“Political competition must now give way to political conciliation and inclusive governance. During the election, you may have been my opponent but you were never my enemy. In my heart, you are my brothers.”
Tinubu who claims to hear and understand the yearning of the youths for good governance said if they work together they shall move the nation like never before.
“Now, to you, the young people of this country, I hear you loud and clear. I understand your pains, and your yearnings for good governance, a functional economy, and a safe nation that protects you and your future.
“I am aware that for many of you, Nigeria has become a place of abiding challenges limiting your ability to see a bright future for yourselves.
“Remodelling our precious national home requires the harmonious efforts of all of us, especially the youth. Working together, we shall move this nation as never before,” the speech read in parts.
Tinubu will be inaugurated president on May 29 the former democracy day. We wish him a peaceful tenure and may his time bring succour to Nigerians. Congratulation Mr. President-elect.
