Michael Jackson Reaches A Major Chart Milestone–One That Few Musicians Ever See

Michael Jackson’s music surged in popularity in October, as it does every year. His catalog, buoyed by “Thriller” and the album of the same name, becomes hugely popular again around Halloween. Weeks later, consumption of his work has slowed, and many of his projects are falling on the Billboard charts…but one of them still manages to make history as it slips.

The Essential Michael Jackson reaches an incredible milestone on one of the most important charts in the U.S. this frame. The compilation has lived on the Billboard 200 for 500 weeks, as of this current period.

This week, The Essential Michael Jackson falls from No. 106 to No. 128 on the Billboard 200, the chart company’s ranking of the most-consumed full-lengths in the country. The hits-packed collection moved another 10,900 equivalent units. That sum includes a little more than 600 actual sales.

It’s not common for any album to spend 500 weeks on the Billboard 200. Of the thousands of projects that have reached the ranking, it’s likely that only a few dozen have managed to hold on for so long—and Jackson has now seen two titles do so.

Before The Essential Michael Jackson reached 500 frames on the chart, Thriller managed the same feat. That set is up to 653 weeks on the Billboard 200, and it’s adding to that large figure constantly.

Thriller is also still present on the Billboard 200, as is almost always the case. That bestseller also slides backward, stepping down from No. 101 to No. 124 on the list.

Jackson likely won’t see another project reach 500 weeks on the Billboard 200 for quite some time. It’s possible that this is the last time such a win will come to the late superstar. The musician’s third-longest-charting title is Number Ones, another compilation that has largely been passed over in favor of The Essential Michael Jackson. Next up from the singer is Off The Wall, which has racked up 193 turns on the tally, though it doesn’t up that count with any regularity.
