Rachel Akosua Funmilola Garton (born 20 January 1991), professionally recognized as Lola Rae, is a British-Ghanaian vocalist, lyricist, and performer of Nigerian descent. She rose to prominence with the release of her debut track, “Watch My Ting Go,” which garnered widespread praise and earned her a nomination for the Most Promising Female Artist to Watch at the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Lola Rae was born to a British father and a Ghanaian mother in Obalende, a neighborhood in Lagos, Nigeria. She completed her elementary and high school education at St. Saviour’s School, Ikoyi, and Lekki British International High School, Lagos, respectively. At 15, she relocated to England to further her studies, enrolling at Central Saint Martins, where she specialized in fashion textiles.
Career
Lola Rae began her journey in the entertainment industry as a dancer, joining the group “Mystikal” in 2010. Mystikal Dance Group auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent, where Rae showcased her vocal talent during the competition. Judge Simon Cowell highlighted the group’s potential during the semi-finals. After the competition, Mystikal secured a one-year contract with Syco. Rae declined an offer to participate in The X Factor to focus on her solo music career.
On 19 November 2012, Rae unveiled her debut hit single, Watch My Ting Go, followed by another track titled High. She received a nomination as the “Most Promising Female Artist to Watch” at the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. The music video for Watch My Ting Go debuted on Soundcity TV on 8 January 2013, featuring appearances by Iyanya and Emma Nyra. The video was later nominated at the 10th Channel O Music Video Awards.
After the success of Watch My Ting Go, Rae collaborated with Iyanya on a track titled Fi Mi Le, which earned her another nomination at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. She also appeared as Ice Prince’s love interest in the music video for his song More.
