Obasanjo Visits Alaafin of Oyo Amid Royal Dispute with Ooni of Ife

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday paid a courtesy visit to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, at his palace in Oyo Town.

The visit was Obasanjo’s first since Oba Owoade’s installation in April 2025 as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The former president, accompanied by his daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, and a delegation of dignitaries, was warmly received by the monarch.

Although the details of their private discussions were not disclosed, the meeting comes against the backdrop of heightened tension between Oba Owoade and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.

The dispute stems from the Ooni’s recent conferment of the title Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Ibadan-based businessman, Dotun Sanusi. Oba Owoade had openly criticized the move, insisting that no single Yoruba monarch holds the authority to bestow titles covering the entire Yorubaland.

Obasanjo’s visit, though officially described as a courtesy call, is expected to draw attention given the sensitive dynamics of Yoruba traditional leadership.
