Q: To begin, could you introduce yourself to our readers—sharing a bit about your professional journey, your passion for tourism, and what drew you to lead the Grenada Tourism Authority?

A: My name is Stacey Liburd, and I am honored to serve as the newly appointed CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA). My professional journey in the tourism industry has been both diverse and rewarding, spanning over 10+ years. I have had the privilege of working in various capacities, most recently as Director of Tourism for the Anguilla Tourist Board, from marketing and destination management to strategic planning and stakeholder engagement. Each role has deepened my understanding of the industry and fueled my passion for promoting the unique beauty and culture of the Caribbean.

My passion for tourism stems from a deep appreciation for the transformative power of travel. I believe that tourism is not just about visiting new places, but about creating meaningful connections, fostering cultural understanding, and contributing to sustainable development. This belief has been the driving force behind my career and continues to inspire me every day.

What drew me to lead the GTA is the incredible potential I see in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique as a destination. The tri-island’s rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and warm hospitality make it a truly special place. I am excited to work with a talented team and dedicated stakeholders to showcase Grenada on a global stage, ensuring that our tourism sector thrives while preserving the unique character and charm that make us so appealing. I look forward to this new chapter, and I am committed to leading the GTA with vision, integrity, and a deep commitment to the sustainable growth of our tourism industry.

Q: With your recent appointment, what is your overarching vision for Grenada’s tourism sector, and how do you plan to guide the Authority toward that future?

A: With my recent appointment, my overarching vision for Grenada’s tourism sector is to position our islands as a premier destination that blends natural beauty, culture, and sustainable practices. My aim is to enhance our global appeal while preserving the unique charm and authenticity that make our tri-island state special.

To accomplish this, my team and I will prioritise sustainable practices that protect our environment and cultural heritage, ensuring that tourism benefits both our community and visitors. Additionally, we seek to expand our tourism offerings that will attract a broader range of visitors by developing niche markets such as adventure tourism, wellness retreats, and cultural experiences.  Of course, none of this is possible without community engagement and strategic partnerships.

My team and I are committed to leading the GTA toward a future that balances growth with sustainability, ensuring that Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique remain a vibrant and welcoming destination.

Q: What strategic priorities will shape your leadership in positioning Grenada as a culturally rich and globally competitive destination?

A: In positioning Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique as culturally rich and globally competitive destinations, my leadership will be shaped by several strategic priorities that include but by no means limited to cultural preservation, focusing on preserving and promoting our tri-island’s rich cultural heritage which will include supporting local artisans, musicians, and cultural festivals that showcase our island’s unique traditions and stories. In doing so, we can offer visitors authentic experiences that set us apart.  Second, to increase our global competitiveness, we will diversify our tourism offerings to appeal to a broader range of travellers. Third, improving connectivity and accessibility is crucial for attracting international visitors. Therefore, we will work to strengthen partnerships with airlines and explore new routes to make Grenada more accessible to key markets while simultaneously investing in infrastructure improvements to enhance the visitor experience.  Finally, we will enhance our online presence, utilise data-driven marketing strategies, and provide digital resources to improve the visitor experience and streamline operations.  I believe that by focusing on these strategic priorities, we can position Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique as destinations that offer a unique blend of cultural richness and modern appeal, while fostering sustainable growth and community well-being.

Q: Grenada’s connection to African heritage is profound. How do you envision honoring and integrating this legacy into tourism experiences that resonate with African travellers seeking reconnection and celebration?

A: Our tri-island state’s deep connection to African heritage is a vital part of our identity, and the GTA is dedicated to honoring and integrating this legacy into our tourism experiences. We aim to create meaningful connections for African travellers seeking reconnection and celebration. Through cultural tours and experiences, festivals and events, collaborations with local communities, storytelling, education, culinary experiences, and partnerships with African nations, we strive to create a welcoming environment that honors our shared history and celebrates the vibrant cultural legacy that continues to shape Grenada today.

Our goals include providing travellers with a deeper understanding of our shared history and cultural roots, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and shared experiences, and working closely with community leaders and cultural organizations to ensure that tourism experiences are respectful, accurate, and enriching for both visitors and residents. We aim to foster a deeper connection to our heritage, highlight traditional dishes and cooking techniques, and allow travellers to explore the flavours and stories behind our food. Additionally, we seek to promote cross-cultural understanding and collaboration, leading to joint initiatives, cultural exchanges, and shared tourism opportunities.

Q: What are some of Grenada’s most compelling sights, activities, or traditions that you believe best showcase the island’s spirit and appeal to travellers?
A: Grenada, Carriacou and Petitie Martinique offer a rich tapestry of experiences that truly capture the islands’ spirit and allure for travellers.  Such activities and traditions include, but are not limited to:

Underwater Sculpture Park, a unique attraction ranked as one of National Geographic’s 25 Wonders of the World, combines art and marine life, offering a fascinating snorkelling or diving experience. The sculptures are not only visually stunning but also serve as artificial reefs, promoting marine conservation.

These, as well as many other experiences, highlight our tri-island’s natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality, all of which make it a captivating destination for travellers seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Q: How do you plan to foster deeper global cultural connections through tourism, and what partnerships or initiatives are you exploring to support this mission?

To foster deeper global cultural connections through tourism, we are dedicated to creating experiences that celebrate and share our rich cultural heritage with the world. Whether through cultural exchanges that encourage interaction between visitors and locals, collaborations with international cultural organisations, educational institutions, and tourism boards to reach a broader audience, or the promotion of local artisans and performers by highlighting their work, we aim to provide visitors with authentic cultural experiences. Our goal is to create a tourism experience that not only showcases our culture but also builds lasting connections with people from around the globe.

Q: What is your personal favourite place in Grenada?

A: I don’t have a favourite place just yet, but I’m thoroughly enjoying exploring the island. Discovering off-the-beaten-path activities, savouring the delicious cuisine, and interacting with the locals have been wonderful experiences. However, if I had to choose a favourite aspect, it would be learning the cultural sayings and idioms.

Q: Finally, what message would you like to share with our readers—especially those across the African diaspora—who may be considering Grenada as their next destination for cultural reconnection and celebration?

Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique are destinations where rich history and vibrant culture come together, offering a unique opportunity to explore your roots and create lasting memories.  Our islands are not only known for its stunning natural beauty but also for its deep cultural heritage, which is reflected in our music, cuisine, and traditions. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the spirit of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

  1. I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the structure of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?
