Early Life and Education

Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, Nana Konadu attended Ghana International School and Achimota School. She studied Art and Textiles at the University of Science and Technology (now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology), later earning diplomas in Interior Design, Personnel Management, and Development Studies.

Partner in Leadership

In 1977, she married Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, who would go on to become Ghana’s Head of State and later President. Their partnership spanned periods of military rule and democratic governance until his passing in 2020.

Transformative First Lady

Serving as First Lady from 1979—and again from 1981 to 2001—she played an active role in policy advocacy and social reform, particularly advancing the rights and welfare of women and children during both the AFRC and PNDC eras, and throughout two constitutional administrations.

Champion for Women

In 1982, she founded the 31st December Women’s Movement—one of Ghana’s most influential women’s organisations, boasting more than two million members at its height. The movement focused on literacy, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and community development.

Political Trailblazer

Striking her own political path, she founded the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2012. In 2016, she made history as the first woman to contest the presidency of Ghana—a bold step that cemented her place as a national trailblazer.
