When I was in my first year in the university I had the habit of escorting my friends to their homes or on weekend getaways at their boyfriend’s As long as you pay for my transport fare and promise me a good time, I am game. My friends trusted me and were safe with me.
I escorted my friend Uju (not real name) to visit her boyfriend Nnamdi (not real name) in Portharcourt. He worked for an oil company and we nicknamed him ‘ego mmanu’ (oil money). He was very generous with money, a bit arrogant but still a nice guy.
So after lectures on Friday, we headed off to PH( mind you this was pre- cell phone era) so he didn’t know we were coming. We got to PH at about 5pm just about the time the end of business day. He lived somewhere at Rumuibekwe.
We waited and waited for hours with the security man. At almost midnight his car pulled up in the drive way and lo and behold he was with another woman. A young woman most probably an undergraduate from University of Portharcourt.
We greeted him, he replied casually and let us into his house. Immediately we got in, I made straight for the bathroom. The young lady went straight to the kitchen to fix ‘her man’ something to eat. I guess she was trying to establish her position as the ‘madam’ of the house. My friend Chinedu said she wanted to have a word with him in the bedroom. Once they entered the room, Uju locked the door with the key behind them, seized the keys and refused to release it.
Our ‘madam’ kept banging on the door shouting and demanding Uju and Nnamdi open the door immediately. She was ignored.
I went to the kitchen to look for what to eat…………what’s my own…….I only came here for the good time that I was promised abeg.
Our ‘madam’ turned on me screaming that I should warn my friend and claimed she would teach her not to mess with a Rivers girl. I warned her sternly to keep me out of their matter. I was only a spectator and a guest in this house.
By morning at about 10am the door was finally unlocked. Nnamdi strolled out of the house to instruct the security man to turn on the generator set. Before you could say ‘LAKUNLE OJO’, our ‘madam’ dashed into the bedroom and pounced on my friend and a fierce physical fight ensured. Everything breakable in that room, broke that day. I immediately ran into the bedroom to break up the fight. This was not what I bargained for. I was promised a good time and this was not my idea of a good time……lol
Nnamdi scolded both women and ordered them to leave his house. We were forced to go back to school that day. Our weekend was ruined. That ended that relationship. Uju cried all the way back to school telling me that this was the second time she was engaging in a fight with another woman over this same guy. I counseled and consoled her, telling her that the right man who will appreciate her will come.
That same year she met a much bigger ‘ego mmanu’ and they got married two years later.My advice to ladies is that when dating a man, do not ever let him tell you twice that he doesn’t want you. The first time he shows you he doesn’t want you, either by words or action especially action, pick up your bag and leave.
