Former world champion Larry Holmes has called for a size limit to be introduced to boxing after watching 6ft 9inch Tyson Fury establish himself as the best heavyweight around.
Holmes, who stands at 6ft 2inches, held the WBC title that is currently in the possession of ‘The Gypsy King’ from 1978 to 1983 and became a legend during that run when he beat Muhammad Ali in 1980.
During his time away from the sport, things have changed and as of late it’s been the bigger men who’ve dominated the heavyweight division.
Right now, Fury is the biggest and best boxer in the division having handily dealt with America’s best Deontay Wilder during their trilogy of fights.
Holmes fears that the US can longer compete with the UK at heavyweight as they are undersized when compared to the likes of Fury and former two-time unified champion Anthony Joshua.
“American guys are little now,” he told the Daily Mail. “Those guys coming from over there (UK), they seem like they’re giants! They are big boys and they are making something out of themselves.”
The 72-year-old is so desperate to end the British dominance at heavyweight, that he hilariously proposed a new law be introduced that would see Fury and Joshua kicked out of the division.
“There should be a law or a limit on the size you can be. Maybe 6ft 5 max,” Holmes joked. “These guys are growing man. I don’t know what they are eating but they are eating something that is making them grow.”
Despite Holmes’ concerns about sheer size becoming the main factor at heavyweight, former cruiserweight king Oleksandr Usyk currently holds three of the four major belts.
The Ukrainian was considered by many to be undersized heading into his September 2021 fight with ‘AJ’ but he silenced the doubters with a flawless unanimous decision win over the British giant.
The heavyweight duo is expected to rematch for the WBO, WBA (Super), and IBF titles on July 23.
