Growing up hopefully many of us had a wonderful grandmother. Mine is still my world. She teaches me culture and wisdom, how to navigate the world and most of all lets me know I’m important and makes me laugh.
My Grandmother’s people started in the Ashanti Kingdom (Asante Mampong). During one of the wars, her people split from the Ashanti and became Akyems. Her ancestors were the first to settle on their new lands, so they became royals. She is from the bretuo clan ( Akans carry their lineage from the mother) so her matrilineal ancestry determines her to be bretuo.
She grew up without a father. Her father who was her mother’s love of her life ( she didn’t get married again after he died) died at the age of 32. So her mother raised her and her 3 brothers on her own. My Grandmother was the last born, her father died before she was two,she has no recollection of him. My Grandmother cooked and sold food growing up to help her mother out and be able to provide some things for herself- she has always been industrious. Her diligent mother managed to take 2 of her elder siblings: the oldest and second born through school all the way to college. My Grandmother didn’t further her education after secondary school due to funds. However, she is one of the smartest women I know.
She got married young to an older wealthy man, however after her firstborn ( my uncle) she decided she wanted to be a modern woman, so she travelled to Accra to make her life. There she met my Grandfather, got married to him and they had 4 children. My mum was the last. During this time she also started work as a customs officer and worked in customs till she retired.
My Grandmother managed to raise her children and took them through school all the way to university or anything they wanted to pursue. She is and will always be a force of nature. She did this while having fun, socialising, and going to dances, she told me she use to do a lot of ballrooms. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out with my grandfather and she found love again later on.
My Grandmother also has a deep love for God. She’s also cheeky, funny, and full of life. What I love about her the most is her ability to be fully herself without apology. She’s an enigma, a complex human being that you don’t really ever get to know fully.
