The final departure of Mama Aina Aideloje, my mother-in-law, was in a blaze of glory.
From Nigeria, South Africa, Australia, USA, Canada, Continental Europe and across the United Kingdom, we gathered to put the glamorous finishing touch to a life well spent by this dedicated teacher who nurtured thousands in and out of the formal classroom. Mummy Aideloje would have naturally brought to life four children, it was obvious last week that she acquired hundreds of children on her journey through life.
The final lap of the journey had started last Thursday with Songs and Tributes. It was an evening of celebrations glazed in an emotional downpour of words and tears.
One by one, young and old, they mounted the rostrum in East London to recall their lives and associations with this departing mother and grandmother. Amid free-flowing tears, one thing was obvious. Mummy Aina Aideloje lived a life of deep impact on many people who fortunately crossed her path.
A day later, on Friday, followed a Christian funeral service at the Emmanuel Parish Church of London E17. Here, Rev Canon Ade Ademola reminded all of the need to live our individual lives in this temporary world in preparation for eternal life. Canon Ademola, who recalled a deeply personal encounter as a young man with Mama Aideloje, further sent many people in-house and online into an emotional breakdown that peaked at the graveyard of the City Of London Crematorium.
Out of the cemetery, the pervading gloom gradually receded into a glamorous celebration of life as the day progressed and guests gathered at PrabaBanqueting Suite of London’s Illfod.
Against the backdrop of juju music and Afrobeat, we danced, dined, drank and made merry into the night amidst further pouring of beautiful memories of a mother who gave much of her life to leave behind a better world for many.
